About this session:

Individuals and families suffering from a chronic illness experience many emotional and physical ups and downs throughout the journey of their illness. Those emotional and physical difficulties are often amplified when their illness requires them to travel far from home to a foreign city away from normal coping mechanisms and support networks. Often the hospitality house staff, volunteers, and other guests are their only supports during this time. It is important as hospitality house professionals that sensitive and compassionate care is provided to guests during this difficult journey.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the physical and emotional impact on individuals and families suffering from chronic illness.
  • Understand effective methods for providing sensitive and compassionate care to individuals and families suffering from chronic illness.
  • Identify importance of and methods to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality when working with individuals and families suffering from chronic illness.
